Temple and Family History consultant is an interesting calling to try and help individuals and our ward.  I know that Family History helps us so much, and while we cannot go to the temple as much as we would like it is a great way to feel the spirit of Elijah.  We have the idea to do a Family History task every week for ten weeks.   The leaders in the ward are hoping that if we are trying to learn simple tasks together about family history, we can have a bit of camaraderie and support.   We may also do more Family History.    I am going to send out two tasks every week.   One Task A for beginning family history and Task B for a more intermediate family

I will post them on the Facebook page and also ask that Brother Kelly Anderson will include them in the weekly email.

We are starting our Tasks this week.

The first task is Getting started in FamilySearch and connecting your family tree

Task A is two parts

#1 Getting Started--Family Search has three simple videos that give excellent instruction on how to start your account.

Steps 1 through 3    To create a new account, you need the church membership number, located in LDS tools, for yourself and your children.   It is also on your temple recommend, and the Bishopric also has access to that number.

#2   Connecting to the Family Tree.   After you have your account, you will need to build a bridge to your deceased ancestors.   There is a short video, but you need to attach your parents and grandparents.    Then you can connect to the family tree and see what has been done on your line.

When your Family Tree is empty  (4th video)

Here are a few more options and resources if you want or need them.  This is a 10-minute video that is basically about how to use Family Search.   The Family History Guy does the video.    Link to intro Video Family Search Overview   Video Here    This is a 20-minute video.   I would suggest following along with two videos if you feel uncomfortable with setting up your account.   Of course, I am also available to help you.    Most of the listed videos are repetitive.  But it is presented differently, and we all learn differently.

Task B.  Searching with WILDCARDS

Wildcards are ways to search databases while using variables.   It is an advanced searching technique that can help you find your ancestor even if their names were miswritten or indexed differently.   Many databases have the option to use wild cards to increase results.    Family Search, Ancestry, and even internet searches can be optimized with Wild Cards. Wildcard Searching video.  Here are three different blog posts on how to use wild-card searches with family history.   Are you my cousin, by Ancestry Blog, and FamilySearch.  When searching for ancestors, sometimes the person who made the record did not spell the names correctly, and sometimes the ancestor did not know how the name was spelled, so having a variable search will help find better results.

President and Sister Holland video

It was an entertaining Discover talk that President Holland, his wife, and his family shared their family history.   It was an excellent opportunity to have a short “Fireside” with our family.   I would suggest watching with your children or with your family.
