Welcome to Week #2 These both are fun activities to complete.
A MEMORIES: PICTURES, DOCUMENTS, AUDIO FILES
Adding Memories to the living and the deceased is a fun way to do family history; it compares to
journaling or scrap booking. FamilySearch is uploading and maintaining all of the information and
the data storage facility that we can use as a resource. A few years ago, I had an incredible
experience where my daughter would ask for a bedtime story about an Ancestor. I have some that
are just in my head. But she requested several nights in a row and wanted a different one every
night. So I had the thought to pull out my phone and just read her some stories off of Family Search;
it was on the
ancestor’s memories page where I could find a quick story. I could chose an ancestor and then
click on their picture and the word memories, and find a brief story that someone else had recorded.
Each ancestor and every person in FamilySearch has a memories page. This week we are going to
focus on the Memories page. Not to be confused with the mobile app, although they are similar.
The goal is to upload some memory to an ancestor, yourself, or even your child in Family Search.
How to upload memories- pictures and stories Family Search help. These instructions were
written by FamilySearch, it has an example for desktop and mobile devices.
The family Search Wiki has pages about uploading to Family Search
App Memories video Memories App to add on video (5 mins) If you add it to FamilyTree on a
mobile device, it will also be on FamilySearch.
Seriously we always have our phones. We can upload them into Family Tree or
Memories App. It is such an easy idea to take pictures of pictures, letters, or photo
albums.
FamilySearch Memories This video explains why and how we can add memories. Princess
Bride clips 😊
BYU Adding memories in Family Search Tree This video also has a handout.
There are so many great videos on how to add memories to our ancestors. These resources are
available wherever you are. Please do not feel that you have to watch all of them. Just try to attach
one picture or memory to yourself or your ancestor.
B. Merging Ancestors Merging people is a difficult skill in FamilySearch. Merging of possible
duplicates are often shown on the right of the details page. They have to be resolved before submitting
a name to the temple. And sometimes it's easy to produce duplicates by accident while adding hints.
So one of my favorite things in FamilySearch is that you can fix anything you break. All of the “Mistakes”
can be changed. Merging, although it can be scary can also be corrected.
Video Merging people This video (13 mins) is great because of explanations on why the duplicates
exist. Relationships are the most important to go through. Naming patterns are widespread, which
means multiple people had the same name.
Family history Fanatics Merging Dec 2020 This video is a good example of using sources or records
to identify different individuals. . I also like where she talks about the options for the reasons
why one should merge.
Modern Genealogy Another video on merging,it's about a half-hour long, it's about reasonable research
verification. Again reviewing the sources and looking at possible duplicates. It is essential to look at the
sources or the original records and decide if there is a place that all of the people may fit before merging
them into a single person.
